David Tennant has been working this week to record a new voice role, that of Mason Savoy in a new animated feature Chew, adapted from the Image Comics series. He takes over the role that was originally to be played by the late Robin Williams.

Other voice cast include Steven Yeun (The Walking Dead) as detective Tony Chu and Felicia Day (Supernatural) as his love interest, food critic Amelia Mintz. David's character, Savoy, is originally Chu's mentor, now turned villain. The movie is directed by Jeff Krelitz (Torchwood: Web Of Lies) who also co-produces with David Boxenbaum, his partner in the multimedia group Heavy Metal.

The macabre comic book series Chew is the creation of writer John Layman and artist Rob Guillory and follows Tony Chu, a cibopath detective who solves crimes by getting psychic impressions from whatever he eats - even human flesh. Set in a world where all bird meats are illegal following a catastrophic outbreak of bird flu that killed 23 million Americans, Chu is a former Philadelphia PD cop who is hired onto the UK Food and Drug Administration by agent Mason Savoy. The darkly comic plot of Chew involves chicken smuggling, increasingly bizarre chicken substitutes, cyborgs and aliens, plus a cast of characters with food-based superpowers. The series first appeared in 2005 and has since won two Eisner and two Harvey Awards.


Chew is slated for a 2015 release. On launching the project last year the producers stated that they would be aiming for a digital rather than theatrical release.
