The ferocious Canyon Fire in Southern California has forced the evacuation of as many as 1,500 residents living around the Santa Ana Mountains near Anaheim.
The wildfire has now spread to 2,000 acres near Chino Hills State Park, California, and is only 5 percent contained, with emergency crews urging people to evacuate homes and schools in the area.
The canyon fire began close to Freeway 91 just after 1pm on Monday, September 25, 2017 and spread into Chino Hills State Park a couple hours later.
Helicopters and other aircraft dropped water on the fire all through Monday and the night. Crews used bulldozers and cleared vegetation by hand to try to halt the fire’s advance.
Four schools have been closed due to the threat from the blaze, with Corona City authorities urging people to leave their homes south of Green River Road to the Trudy Way area.
Footage posted to social media shows huge fires burning across the hills above the city of Corona, with flames and plumes of smoke cutting across major roadways in the area.
